A brief introduction to the juridical and pastoral aspects of the liturgy as found in Book IV of the Code of Canon Law, the Church’s other liturgical laws and directives in the Praenotanda, and the instructions for the various rites and liturgical actions. Principles for proper interpretation of liturgical law provide a solid pastoral foundation for the practical application of liturgical law and directives.

Msgr. Dempsey holds graduate degrees in philosophy and theology from Loyola University of Chicago, the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome), the University of St. Mary of the Lake (Mundelein), and the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (Rome). He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1980 by St. John Paul II. After several parochial assignments in the Chicago area, he served as editor of the weekly English edition of L’Osservatore Romano. After returning to the U.S., he was pastor of St. Philip the Apostle Parish in Northfield (2003-2017), and a member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors. He is currently pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Lake Forest, an instructor at the Liturgical Institute (USML), and a magistral chaplain of the Order of Malta.
